Yves Engler is a Montréal activist and author. He has previously published three books: The Black Book of Canadian Foreign Policy; Playing Left Wing: From Rink Rat to Student Radical; and (with Anthony Fenton) Canada in Haiti: Waging War on The Poor Majority. Canada and Israel: Building Apartheid is the first critical primer about Canada’s ties to Israel. It is a devastating account of Canadian complicity in 20th and 21st century colonialism, dispossession and war crimes. The book documents the history of Canadian Christian Zionism, Lester Pearson’s important role in the United Nations negotiations to create a Jewish state on Palestinian land and the millions of dollars in tax-deductible donations used to expand Israeli settlements in the West Bank. It argues that while both Liberal and Conservative governments have taken one-sided pro-Israel foreign policy stances, the current Harper government foreign policy is the most pro-Israel in the world.

“Our foreign policy towards Israel flouts both the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and international law,” said Engler, author of The Black Book of Canadian Foreign Policy, which was nominated for the 2009 Mavis Gallant Award for non-fiction. “Canadians of good conscience need to, first, understand and then act to change what is being done in our name.”

Canada and Israel : Building Apartheid (Le Canada et Israël, ensemble pour bâtir l’apartheid) est la première étude critique des liens du Canada avec Israël. C’est un compte-rendu dévastateur de la complicité canadienne en colonialisme, en expropriation et en crimes de guerre au 20ème et au 21ème siècle. Le livre documente l’histoire du sionisme chrétien au Canada, l’important rôle de Lester Pearson lors des négociations des Nations unies visant à créer un État juif sur le territoire palestinien, et les millions de dollars exempts d’impôt qui ont servi à agrandir les colonies israëliennes en Cisjordanie. Il explique, faits à l’appui, qu’alors que les gouvernements libéraux et conservateurs ont adopté, en politique étrangère, des prises de position unilatéralement favorables à Israël, la présente politique étrangère du gouvernement Harper est de loin la plus pro-Israël au monde.
